    New Client Anxiety!

Hi Tammy. I'm a bit unclear. He's already paid for August and September, right? So do you mean you're billing him for October already? I also ask clients to prepay a retainer upfront. They are billed the first of the month for that month, not for the following month. You did the right thing...

60 day hold when transferring domain

It's one reason we have moved away from GoDaddy. There's no need for it. We now use DomainSite and are very happy. They allow you to use Gmail for your business at no extra charge. So all our emails can be from our domain names.

Any luck with running newspaper ads?

I've found that traditional newspaper ads just don't cut it anymore. What I would encourage is using that money to drive to local networking events and meet business owners in person. They want to know who you are. Once they get to know you and come to trust you, then they will be willing to...

Announcement Business Card Review (Revised My Cards!)

I'd highly recommend putting your email address on the card. I've found that most people want to be able to just send an email as their first contact. The 'click' is also a bit confusing. As much as I love the look, the back is a bit busy. We once made the mistake of having so much information...

    Finder Fees

I had a client that operated a referral business. So I was in her 'book' and on her website for her clients. What we did was trade services. She normally charged a certain amount for someone being listed in her referral business; so I traded that amount in my services. Your case sounds a bit...

Question Should I Lower My Virtual Assistant Rates?

Re: Should I Lower My Rates? I've had the very same thing happen to me, and no I wouldn't lower my rates. I've found too many people more than happy to pay my rates. I've found that the ones that want a lower rate are the hardest to work with. In fact I've raised my rates considerably over the...

    Incremental hourly billing

I used a 15-minute increment to begin with to cover some of the admin tasks. However, clients began wanting to cut back because of the economy. So I raised my rates and charge only by the minute. They pay only for time I actually work and my admin costs are covered by my raised rates.

    What do you think of...

You want your business name to reflect what you do. Think about your target market - who is your ideal client? Who do you want to attract? Then think about a name that would attract them. I'd be happy to give you more specific information if you'd like to PM me.

    Question Creating Blogs for clients

Many clients don't have a clue as to how to set up a blog. So anything you do for them is well beyond what they expect. I'd charge a project price for setting up the blog based on your experience of how long one takes.

    Transcription Software

I've used Express Scribe and if you're going to do lots of transcribing, a foot pedal is very handy. I usually only doing a small amount here and there and use the play with pausing feature. That speed is usually sufficient for me. Since I've used shorthand most of my adult life, I've also...

Question Referral Program Poll - Please Participate

I don't have an official referral system in place. It's unofficial. Ninety-nine percent of my business comes from word of mouth referrals. Not because I'm offering an incentive but because clients are so happy with results. Once they do refer my services and I sign on that new client, I go back...

The subs I have working for me right now get about a 60/40 split as they are new and we're spending a lot of time training them. However, I just did a 50/50 split with a sub on a new project. However, my subs don't work for themselves. I mean they are my team members and aren't out trying to get...
