To get my foot in the door when I first started on Elance several years ago, I charged $4 an hour. FOR ONE PROJECT! After that first project, it went up as that was ridiculous. It continued to go up to cover my "opportunity cost"(ie time spent with my family, that additional hour of sleep, time at the gym, etc) and I now either get what I expect to make(what my time is worth to ME) or I won't accept the client. I am willing to work with most of them within their budgets but I will not work for $4 an hour ever again! I don't care what offshore person with bad English and no awareness of grammar charges! AmysWinningWays is now billing almost 7 figures so I see no point changing anything about what I charge. And some of those clients that went the "cheap" route have gotten what they paid for and then come back to me so that I could clean up the mess that "saving" them money created. As I remind many, if you pay $50 for a $200 project, you are going to get $50 worth of work...and if often costs them $250.
